Encephalartos altensteinii

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Vulnerable.

CULTIVATION:

  • Semi shade to full sun.
  • Does well with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Tolerant of light frost.

PROPAGATION:

  • Grow relatively fast and is easily propagated from seeds and suckers.

NATURAL HABITAT:

  • Eastern Cape Province in various habitat from coastal bush to grassveld from the  Bushman’s River to the southern border of KwaZulu Natal.

STEM:

  • Arborescent erect stem attains a length of up to 7 meters and diameter of 25 – 50 cm.

LEAVES:

  • Upper side of the leaves is glossy dark green and the lower side is slightly paler green.
  • Leaves are rigid and can be from 1.5 m up to 4 m in length.
