Encephalartos caffer

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Prefers regular water with good drainage.
  • Full sun to semi shade.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Mainly from seed.
  • Seldom produces suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Eastern Cape Province from Humansdorp to the Willowvale and Kentani areas in the Transkei.
  • Grows in open grassland.

STEM:

  • Erect but subterranean and can attain a length of 30-40 cm with a diameter of 20 cm - 30 cm.
  • Stem crown is covered with soft woolly cataphylls.

LEAVES:

  • Dark green on the upper side and a paler duller green on the lower side.
  • Leaves are 40 cm – 100 cm long
  • Two distinct leaf forms exist between various localities.
CONES:
  • Both male and female cones emerge with a bright green colour but become more yellowish with cone maturity.
  • There is also a variation in the cones of the various localities.
