Encephalartos cycadifolius

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Does well with regular watering, but must have good drainage.
  • Full sun.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Propagate from suckers and seed but is slow growing.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Eastern Cape Province in the Winterberg mountain range in the Bedford and Cradock districts in open grassland.

STEM:

  • Erect stem is partially subterranean and often produces multiple suckers that eventually form clumps of smaller plants around the main stem.
  • Stem can attain lengths of up to 1.5 m above ground and a diameter of 20 cm – 30 cm.

LEAVES:

  • Dull green on the upper side and a paler green on the lower side.
  • Leaves are straight and can also have an upwards curve with yellow rachis in mature leaves. 
CONES:
  • Cones are yellow with a dense yellowish woolly outer layer.
