Encephalartos eugene maraisii

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Does well with regular watering.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Propagated readily from seed and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Northern Province in the Waterberg and adjacent areas.

STEM:

  • Erect, aerial stems that can reach a length of up to 4 meters long. Stems can become procumbent when reaching lengths of 1.5 meters to 2 meters in length.
  • Apex of the stem is covered with soft whitish cataphylls.

LEAVES:

  • The leaves of E. eugene maraisii are a light bluish green depending on the amount of sun.
  • Leaves are rigid and can reach a length of 1.5 m.
  • Leaflets shield one another.
CONES:
  • Reddish brown colour with sometimes almost a burgundy tinge. Female cones can sometimes also have a lighter colour with green on the bullae of the cone.
