CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Vulnerable.

CULTIVATION:

  • Semi shade to full sun.
  • Regular watering in slightly acidic soil.
  • Frost hardy. Berg form is extremely cold hardy and tolerates severe frost and snow.

PROPAGATION:

  • From suckers and seeds.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • 3 Different areas:
  • Drakensberg in the vicinity of Mount-aux-Sauces (Berg- or Giant form.)
  • Northern part of the Eastern Cape Province in the vicinity of Flagstaff and Tabankulu. (Lowlands form)
  • KwaZulu Natal in the Impendle Area (Dwarf form)

STEM:

  • Stems of the Giant form can reach lengths of 3 meters with a diameter of 40 cm – 50 cm.
  • Stems from the Dwarf form seldom reach more than 50 cm. Giant form has golden brown wool in the crown, while Lowlands and Dwarf forms are less woolly with greyish brown cataphylls.

LEAVES:

  • Leaves of the Giant form are initially covered in brown wool and the other 2 forms covered in whitish wool.
  • Mature leaves are dark green.
  • Rachis becomes bright yellow and curve upward.
  • Leaflets have entire and very distinct revolute margins.
CONES:
  • Cones have a dense permanent light brown to yellowish outer woolly layer.
