Encephalartos middelburgensis

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Critically endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Regular watering and good drainage.
  • Frost hardy.

PROPAGATION:

  • Fast grower that readily propagates from seed and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Mpumalanga Province where it grows on steep slopes and rocky areas in the Middelburg district and Loskopdam area.

STEM:

  • Erect, aerial stem that can become reclining when long.
  • Stem can attain a length of up to 7 meters with a diameter of 25 cm – 50 cm.
  • Stem apex has long, slender grey cataphylls.

LEAVES:

  • Blue green leaves with both sides about the same colour.
  • Leaves are typically straight with the tips curving slightly upward. This gives E. middelburgensis an unique profile.
  • Leaflets are straight, entire with a pungent apex.

CONES:
  • Both sexes produce cones with a reddish-brown colour due to a thin hairy outer layer. In one area plants produce bright green cones.
