Encephalartos princeps

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Critically endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Hardy to drought but does well with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Frost hardy.

PROPAGATION:

  • Readily propagated from seed and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Eastern Cape Province in the catchment areas of the Great Kei river and Kubusi rivers.
  • All these areas are located in the Queenstown, Cathcort, Komga and Butterworth districts.

STEM:

  • Erect, aerial stem that sometimes become decumbent in big plants.
  • Stem can attain lengths of up to 5 meters with a diameter of 30 cm – 45 cm.

LEAVES:

  • Leaves have a blue-green colour with new leaves and a more blue-silvery look on the upper side.
  • Leaves are straight but curve down at the apex.
  • Leaflets shield one another.
  • Leaf bases have a yellow brown collar.
  • Leaflet margins are mostly entire but sometimes have 1 – 2 teeth on the
    lower margin.
CONES:
  • Both genders produce dull green cones.
