Encephalartos aemulans

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Critically endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Semi shade to full sun.
  • Does well with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Tolerant of light frost.

PROPAGATION:

  • From seedlings and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Northern KwaZulu Natal.
  • Found only in one small area south-east of Vryheid near Dlomodlomo.

STEM:

  • Arborescent erect stems can attain a length of up to 3 meters with diameter of 30 – 40 cm.
  • Stem apex is typically covered by brown wool

LEAVES:

  • Leaves are straight, rigid and 1.2 m – 1.45 m long.
  • Leaflets are dark glossy green on the upper side and a duller lighter green on the lower side.
CONES:
  • Male and female cones are very similar in size, shape and appearance.
  • The cones of both genders have a brown woolly surface.
