CONSERVATION STATUS:
- Critically endangered.
CULTIVATION:
- Semi shade to full sun.
- Does well with regular watering but can sustain drought.
- Frost hardy.
PROPAGATION:
- Readily propagated from seed and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
- Currently a variety of plants with thin leaflets are grouped together as laevifolius.
- The original plants described as E. laevifolius are from the Mpumalanga Province in the Nelspruit, Kaapsche Hoop district. (The other plants also known as laevifolius will be discussed in depth under the heading: “Focus on” on our website.)
STEM:
- Aerial and erect, although long stems can become reclining.
- Stems can attain a length of 5 meters and a diameter of 25 cm - 40 cm.
- Stem apex is tightly packed with grey cataphylls that are hairless.
- Stems have characteristically alternating bands of small and large leaf bases, giving it a distinct appearance.
