Encephalartos lehmanii

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Threatened.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Can sustain drought but does well with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Frost resistant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Readily propagated from seed and suckers.
  • Relatively fast growing and transplants mostly successful.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Eastern Cape Province on hills and mountains from the Uitenhage to Pearston area, close to the eastcoast to areas of Willowmore and Steytlerville inland.

STEM:

  • Erect, aerial stem which sometimes branches.
  • Stem can reach a length of 2 meters with a diameter of 25 cm to 45 cm.
  • The stem has relatively large leaf bases.

LEAVES:

  • Light blue-grey colour on the upper side with older leaves changing to a dark green colour due to loss of the wax layer on the leaflets.
  • Leaves are straight but curve downwards near the apex.
  • Leaflets sometimes shield one another.
  • Leaf bases have a conspicuous yellow-brown collar.
CONES:
  • Both genders produce a single cone per season per stem. The cones have a dark brown -reddish colour covering a mainly green surface.
