Encephalartos cerinus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Critically endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Does well with regular watering and good drainage, but can survive in drought.
  • Semi shade to full sun.
  • Tolerant of light frost.

PROPAGATION:

  • Grows relatively fast and is easily propagated from seed. Rarely produces any suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • KwaZulu Natal in the Tugela Ferry District. Often found in open, rocky areas and on cliffs.

STEM:

  • Subterranean stem with a length of up to 30 cm – 35 cm and a diameter of 20 cm – 30 cm.

LEAVES:

  • Blue to bluish green on the upper side and paler on the lower side.
  • They are straight, rigid and from 0.5 meter – 1.5 meter long.
  • Leaflets are typically covered with a thick wax layer.
  • Encephalartos cerinus pushing new leaves.
CONES:
  • Cones are also covered with a waxy outer layer and are initially blue-green, becoming yellowish at maturity.
