Encephalartos cupidus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Critically endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Thrives in deep soil with good drainage.
  • Full sunlight.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Suckers profusely and also propagate from seed.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Mpumalanga Province in the Blyde river area. Occurs in open grassland and on cliff ledges.

STEM:

  • Erect but mainly subterranean.
  • Stems seldom projecting more than 20 cm - 30 cm above ground level and can be up to 20 cm - 25 cm in diameter. 

LEAVES:

  • Dull blue greyish colour on both sides of leaflets.
  • Leaves become bluish green with maturity.
  • Leaves are rigid, straight with a slight recurve at the tip.
  • Leaflets have sharp teeth on both margins.
CONES:
  • Both sexes produce usually one bright green cone per stem. Cones become more yellow with maturity.
