Encephalartos ferox

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Near threatened.

CULTIVATION:

  • Semi shade.
  • Regular watering and sandy soil.
  • Frost sensitive.

PROPAGATION:

  • Propagate from seed.
  • Grows relatively fast from seed.
  • Occasionally produces suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Grows along the eastern coast of Southern Africa, from Kosi Bay in the north of
    KwaZulu Natal up into Mozambique 100 km north of Vilanculos.

STEM:

  • Erect, aerial stem up to 2 meters long.

LEAVES:

  • Leaves are dark green with paler green on the lower sides.
  • Leaves are straight or with a slight downward curve.
  • Leaflets are lobed 30 mm – 80 mm broad and quite hard.
  • The plants from the Kosi Bay area have much broader leaflets than the plants in Mozambique.

CONES:
  • Probably the most striking cones of all Encephalartos species with a bright red orange colour to yellow. The more south the origin of the plant, the more red and orange the cone. The plants from the northern areas in Mozambique tend to have lighter orange to yellow cones..
