CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Near threatened.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Can sustain drought but do well with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Readily propagated from suckers and seed but is one of the slower growing species.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Eastern Cape Province in short grassveld and rocky slopes in the Cathcart and Queenstown districts.

STEM:

  • Aerial and erect, but long stems can recline.
  • Stems can attain a length of 4 m with a diameter of 30 cm – 60 cm.
  • Crown has a woolly layer of golden brown wool.

LEAVES:

  • Upper side of the leaves are blue green with a silvery wax coating on the lower side.
  • Leaves are straight but can be slightly curved downwards.
  • Leaflets are 7 mm – 8 mm wide and shield one another.
CONES:
  • Cones of both genders have a dense light brown permanent woolly outer layer.
