Encephalartos humilis

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Regular watering.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • From seed and suckers but is slow growing.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Mpumalanga Province in the Lydenburg, Machadodorp and Nelspruit districts on steep grassy slopes between rocks in full sun.

STEM:

  • One of the smallest Encephalartos species with a stem that is largely subterranean and erect.
  • It suckers freely and is therefore often found in clusters.
  • Stems can reach 40 cm – 50 cm in length with a diameter of 10 cm – 20 cm.
  • Stem has a slightly woolly appearance.

LEAVES:

  • Bluish green on the upper side with a paler green on the lower side.
  • Leaf apex curves downwards and the rachis of older leaves become yellow.
  • Leaves are not very stiff.
CONES:
  • Both genders produce only one woolly yellowish brown cone. Plants don’t cone frequently.
