Encephalartos dolomiticus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Critically endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Does well with regular watering and good drainage, but can sustain drought.
  • Full sun.
  • Frost hardy.

PROPAGATION:

  • Propagate from both seed and suckers.

NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Northern Province in the Transvaal Drakensberg between Penge and The Downs.
  • Typically grows in an area with dolomitic rocks in open grassland.

STEM:

  • Erect, although long stems tend to become procumbent.
  • Stems can attain a length of up to 2 meters with a diameter of 25 cm – 40 cm.
  • The apex of the stem typically has greyish, woolly cataphylls.

LEAVES:

  • Leaves have a blue green colour on both sides.
  • They are rigid, about 60 cm – 80 cm long.
  • The leaves are straight, but the rachis can sometimes be twisted, that render the plant an untidy look.
CONES:
  • Have a blue-green look.
